Petals

I have one giant poppy
that stands straight and true
But this year it shut tight

And would not come through.

Then suddenly this week
In an interlude of light
It burst open its petals
A beautiful sight!

Behind this the roses
Usually blooming in May
Opened their buds
On the very same day!

Everything's late
With the change in the weather
Yet nature adapts
Works her pattern as ever!
